The second part of director Sam Hargrave’s Extraction was released recently. Extraction 2 was able to meet the expectations of the fans as it contained a lot of action-packed sequences that kept the fans on their toes. Even the critics of the movie agree that actor Chris Hemsworth’s performance as mercenary Tyler Rake was outstanding.

Tyler Rake’s latest mission is to extract a mother and her two kids from a prison. The action during the extraction mission was phenomenal. It was revealed that Hemsworth was actually set on fire for the sequence because CGI wouldn’t have the same effect.

A scene in Extraction 2 required actor Chris Hemsworth to set himself on fire. The MCU didn’t hesitate as he’s always up for a challenge. Director Sam Hargrave recently talked about the scene,

“I will take that as part of my legacy. The person who lit Chris Hemsworth on fire. The first person to light him on fire. I wanted to mix elements together on camera. It’s snowing, it’s nighttime, and then the contrast to that to get people excited, I thought, light him on fire. CGI fires wouldn’t have the same reality. There are great companies that do some great work, and there are times that it would be really good, but for this, we needed it to be practical to work. Yeah, so, we lit him on fire. Now he can go down in the history of the action genre as an actor who lit himself on fire.”
During the scene, Rake is attacked by a group of prisoners as he makes his way out of the prison with a mother and her two children.

Hemsworth and Hargrave talked about the scene at a press conference in Manila before the release of the movie. During the interview, Hargrave revealed that Hemsworth was set on fire 8 times and joked that he “enjoyed lighting Chris Hemsworth on fire” and that it “was the most rewarding part.”

Hemsworth was asked about his favorite moment of the particular scene and he joked, “Completion.” The use of CGI was avoided throughout the film. Collaborating with a talented team, Hargrave has crafted a movie that leaves viewers on the edge of their seats.

The scene wasn’t filmed in one go

Several cuts were made while filming the scene in order to prevent any injuries. The particular scene stands out as it is, undoubtedly, one of Hargrave’s best works. The director said,

“We build in certain stitch points where we could but in those broken-up pieces you still have sequences that will be between 30 seconds and a minute-and-a-half. Sometimes there are 50, 60. 75 moves in a row with dozens of stunt performers. And it was at night, in the middle of winter. Chris had red ears and a red nose because he was freezing.”

Sam Hargrave has left an indelible mark on the action genre, solidifying his position as a filmmaker who consistently pushes the boundaries of what is possible in cinema.

Extraction 2 is on Netflix.
