The driving force behind a new analysis suggesting that investing in early childhood could yield billions for the nation’s economy is Catherine, who last year, while battling cancer and raising three children, established the Royal Foundation’s Business Task Force for Early Childhood. According to the group’s estimates, such investments could potentially contribute up to £45 billion annually.
Kensington Palace has clarified that Catherine is not currently returning to full-time work but remains informed about developments related to the initiative. In March 2023, the Princess of Wales initiated the task force to encourage businesses to prioritize early childhood. Members have since collaborated to assess the potential impact and the role of businesses in this endeavor.
A senior royal aide told MailOnline that Catherine has been instrumental in leading the business task force, staying updated on its progress and reviewing its reports. The aide emphasized that Catherine’s primary focus remains on this initiative, which she will continue to champion once she resumes her official duties after recovering.
The latest analysis highlights that investing in early childhood could add significant value to the national economy, potentially generating £45.5 billion annually. This includes £17.2 billion for parental support, £16.2 billion in savings from avoiding remedial actions due to childhood adversity, and £12.2 billion for enhancing social and emotional skills early in life.
“This marks another milestone in our efforts to prioritize Early Childhood across society,” said Christian Guy, Executive Director of the Royal Foundation Center for Early Childhood. He emphasized the collective responsibility of Britain’s leading companies in promoting children’s well-being, urging CEOs to prioritize support for families, enhance social-emotional health, and value early childhood education.
The initiative has garnered support from eight founding partners committed to reshaping national approaches to early childhood education. They echo Catherine’s call to reconsider how society supports children’s crucial early years, affirming their commitment to the Royal Foundation’s mission.
“Inspired by Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales, we are dedicated to making a lasting impact on children’s lives today and in the future,” their joint statement read.
The comprehensive business case for change reflects collaborative efforts, shared learning, and a profound understanding of early childhood development’s significance. As efforts continue through the Royal Foundation Center for Early Childhood, Catherine’s leadership and advocacy remain central to shaping the campaign’s impact and outreach.
