Much of the attention on this lauded WNBA rookie class focused around Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark, and for good reason. But, it’s her rival, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese who is already setting some pretty cool WNBA records.

Angel Reese was an excellent rebounder during her time in college, first at Maryland and then at LSU. While many probably expected her to be a good rebounder in the WNBA after being taken 7th overall by the Chicago Sky in April, I’m not sure anyone thought she would be as good as she has been.

Coming into Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Lynx, Angel Reese was 2nd in the league in rebounding with 11.1 rebounds per game. That’s helped her accumulate nine straight double-doubles, a streak dating back to June 4.

On Sunday, she had a chance to make history, as her nine straight double-doubles tied her for the longest streak in a single season with all-time great Candace Parker.

With a double-double against the Lynx, she would have the record by herself. It wasn’t her best game as a pro, as she went 4-16 from the field for a cold-shooting Sky team that managed only 62 points.

But, she managed to get the record-setting double-double, tracking down 16 rebounds to go along with 10 points. Reese’s putback layup with less than a minute left in the game got her to double digits in scoring and into the record books. Take a look.

There were concerns if her game would translate from college to the WNBA. It’s clear that it has and she’s going to be a star player in the WNBA for a long time.

For the league, that’s a great thing. Her rivalry with Caitlin Clark is probably the biggest draw in the sport, and if both are them are stars that’s only going to make it a bigger draw.
