Loose Women’s Denise Welch has shared her thoughts on why she thinks the public’s dislike for Meghan Markle grew after her marriage to Prince Harry in 2018. The 66 year old TV personality, who is known for defending the couple, discussed their decision to step down from Royal duties in 2020 and relocate to America with their children, Archie, five, and Lilibet, three.
During a recent podcast appearance, Denise was asked if she thought racism played a part in the widespread negative response to Meghan, who is of mixed heritage. The actress suggested that palace officials might have felt that Kate Middleton, Prince William’s wife, needed to be the “peoples’ princess” leaving no space for Meghan.
Moreover, the Loose Women panel member expressed her belief that “racism” did play a role in the unequal treatment of Meghan compared to Kate. She added: “I think there was racism involved in it, of course there was, like when Princess Diana was with Dodi Fayed.”
“The same sort of thing, they don’t want [it]. I’m not saying this is the actual family, I’m saying the people who look after the royal family. The men in grey suits and everything, they probably didn’t like this at all.”
In defence of Meghan, Denise pointed out that many may not know that before meeting Harry, the former Suits star was already an advocate for women’s rights and a humanitarian. “She was in those rooms before she married Harry,” Denise emphasised, reports the Express.
“She was a young woman of colour speaking out for women of colour and equality for women from a very very young age.”
“She was on the stage talking for the United Nations, she went all over the place talking on behalf of those issues. So, although there was an elevated status given to her as a Princess, she still was in those rooms.”
Denise further explained that Harry “fell for that side of her personality” along with her being a “beautiful woman”.
The mum-of-two, whose son Matt Healy is part of the band 1975 and resides in Los Angeles, also dismissed rumours that Americans are not big fans of the couple living in their country.
She emphasised: “They [the press] make out that you guys don’t [love them], and I know from being here that you guys do love them.”
In response, the podcast’s American hosts said everybody did in fact welcome the pair in the US.
“They’re not hurting anybody,” Denise continued. “They’ve got two beautiful children and they’re not harming everybody.”
“I get so angry because I’m so in a minority at home, it’s crazy.”
During the conversation, Denise also mentioned the time she had a disagreement with former press secretary Dickie Arbiter on Loose Women, which resulted in 100 Ofcom complaints.
The pair had differing views on why Harry and King Charles’ relationship was strained and how, if possible, they could reconcile.
Denise Welch didn’t hold back during a heated exchange, accusing Royal commentator Dickie Arbiter of being “up the King’s a**e” and failing to grasp the full picture behind Prince Harry’s decision to leave the UK.
At the time, Arbiter had opined that the tension between King Charles and Prince Harry was due to Harry “rubbishing the family since he walked out in 2020”.
Denise, fed up with the constant criticism aimed at Harry and Meghan, retorted that she was “sick to death” of it all. When Arbiter implied she was swayed by tabloid sensationalism, Denise clapped back, “No, I haven’t, and don’t disrespect me for saying that,” asserting her informed stance on Meghan’s treatment.
The debate grew more intense, with Coleen Nolan trying to intervene, before concluding on Arbiter’s belief that the Sussexes should publicly apologise for reconciliation, while Denise suggested they might not see the need to apologise.
