Patrick Mahomes got exactly what he wanted in the Kansas City Chiefs’ game-sealing play in Sunday’s AFC Championship tilt against the Baltimore Ravens.
Kansas City was up 17-10 with 2:19 remaining in the fourth quarter. With Baltimore out of timeouts, the Chiefs just needed one first down to ice the game and punch another ticket to the Super Bowl.
“Inside the NFL” has shared a clip of a mic’d up Mahomes telling Chiefs coaches, “Give me the ball” ahead of the 3rd-and-9 play. Mahomes got his wish and made the most on his promise by delivering the game-sealing strike to Marquez Valdes-Scantling:
And that, folks, is how guys like Mahomes set themselves apart from most quarterbacks.
Mahomes didn’t have his best day by any means, completing 30 of 39 pass attempts for 241 yards and only one touchdown. The Chiefs didn’t score at all in the second half, but Mahomes and the offense delivered when they needed to most — as usual.
Incredibly, the Chiefs have now won four of the last five AFC Championship banners. They were underdogs against the Buffalo Bills and the Ravens on the road in this year’s postseason, but Mahomes and the defending champions once again proved that you simply can’t buy the “it” and “clutch” factors.
The Chiefs will try to become the first team to repeat since the 2003 and ’04 New England Patriots when they face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58.
