Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s stark difference in body language has been highlighted by former royal correspondent Michael Cole,
as the couple kick off their latest international tour.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex landed in Colombia as part of a four-day visit to the South American country,
accepting an invitation from controversial Vice President Francia Márquez.
Escorted by a 15-car security convoy, Harry and Meghan undertook four separate engagements in their first day, highlighting the issues of online safety for children.
Speaking to GB News, former BBC Royal Correspondent Michael Cole noted Prince Harry’s “distant” demeanour in comparison to his “smiling” wife Meghan.
Sharing the latest from the Colombia tour, Cole told GB News: “If you look at Meghan, she’s there, she comes out, she’s got the suit, she’s got the smile, she is on point and she’s doing everything that she could have done had she stayed within the bosom of the Royal Family, and doing it rather well.
“The difference in body language I think is with Harry – he looks a little bit distant, a little bit hesitant. He’s smiling from time to time, but not necessarily enjoying it as much as she is.”
Highlighting the duchess’s confidence on their first day out and about in Colombia, Cole noted how Meghan appears to be “running the show” with Harry following behind.
Cole added: “She seems to be running the show. As they came out, she said to him ‘hand’, and he had to put out his hand to grab her hand. It was quite clear who was in charge of that particular stage management.
“Obviously they want to do good. There’s an awful lot of good that needs doing in the world, and if they can do some, jolly good for them.”
Turning the discussion to the ongoing security concerns for Harry and Meghan, Cole admitted that he would have “advised against the trip” due to the “risks” of travelling to Colombia.
“Because whenever there’s a royal invitation to anywhere within this country or overseas, it’s looked at very carefully and studied.”
He continued: “Would the Foreign Office have vetoed this trip? We don’t know. But I think it would be a strong possibility, because the volatility of the country and the physical danger is there.”
Offering his verdict on the Colombia tour as a whole, Cole admitted that the visit “does feel like a royal tour”, and is the “most risky thing they’ve done since moving to America”.
Cole said: “I think it’s the most risky thing they’ve done since they scooted from royal life and went off to Canada in 2020.
“It’s risky physically, because the Foreign and Commonwealth Office warns against all but the most essential travel to certain parts of Colombia, and says that there’s a real risk of conflict in certain areas despite the ending of the Civil War.
“I think they have to wonder about how they sell their celebrity, their main currency, and their royal status and to whom they sell that currency.”
