He’s been entertaining the masses for decades and in the United Kingdom, Welsh crooner Tom Jones has wowed audiences yet again by dueting with a contestant on the British version of The Voice.
Fans of Jones will recall this is now the third time he’s spontaneously burst into song from his big red chair on the new season of hit reality show. This time, 28-year-old Bethzienna Williams got the surprise of her life after she wowed the crowd with her rendition of ‘Cry To Me’ by Solomon Burke during her audition.
Clearly impressed, the 84-year-old wanted to know more about the singer and her interesting choice of song.
“How do you know that song?” he asked Williams. “It’s a great song. I love that. I sang that myself on stage. I sang it through the summer.”
Fellow judge Jennifer Hudson wanted to hear her co-star sing it.
“C’mon, let us hear,” she pleaded, causing the audience to burst into applause.
“Do you mind if I sang it?” he asked the contestant, who was thrilled to share the moment with the music icon.
Jones was handed a microphone and it didn’t take long for him to work his magic. He began the song from his seat but truly getting into the spirit, he leapt up and joined the aspiring musician on stage.
Fellow judge Olly Murs burst out of his seat and started randomly dancing with a woman in the audience, as Hudson filmed the special moment on her phone.
Jones later took to Twitter to share the moment with his followers.
“Can’t beat the soul classics,” he wrote. “I’ve been singing Solomon Burke’s hit ‘Cry To Me’ on tour recently, so it was a thrill to sing it with @bethzienna on @thevoiceuk.”
Fans couldn’t get enough of the duet and praised both the ‘What’s New Pussycat’ singer and Voice contestant online.
One comment on Twitter read: “It was amazing. Tom Jones you’re a legend, I spent my childhood listening to your music. My mum was a massive fan and I’m so sorry I stole all her records, put them in a pillowcase and sold them at the local record shop so I could go to the fair!! Boy was she angry.”
Another fan said: “Best thing on the voice is when Sir Tom gets to sing.”
A third added: “Special moments like this is why I love The Voice, the way the Judges make the day for contestants in a way that only they can. Respect.”
