Danny Green reveals how he was given a huge shock in a 2.30am phonecall

NBA veteran Danny Green has lifted the lid on how his life was turned upside down by James Harden’s blockbuster trade to the Los Angeles Clippers.

As part of the Philadelphia 76ers’ move to ship out the disgruntled All-Star, Green was waived by general manager Daryl Morey shortly after rejoining the team on a non-guaranteed deal.

In a seven-man trade, the 76ers sent out three players to the Clippers – Harden, P.J. Tucker and Filip Petrusev.

They also acquired four players – Nicolas Batum, Marcus Morris, Robert Covington and K.J. Martin.

To fulfill roster regulations, it meant the end of Green’s return to Philadelphia, in which he averaged just nine minutes per contest and just half a point in two games this season.

The timing could not have been worse for the 15-year NBA veteran and his family.

“It was about 2am, 2.30am in the morning, I get the call from Daryl,” Green told the Inside The Green Room podcast.

“And he wanted me to hear from him first, so I appreciate him calling and reaching out and showing me the respect.

“But he said it was a trade that was made, they got more players than they sent out and unfortunately they had to waive somebody and my contract was one that needed to be waived.

“And this is even more unfortunate, I’m 90% done unpacking my stuff.

“I’m pretty much unpacking all day and I think we’re probably seven-eighths through, getting rid of stuff, so this happens as I’m almost done unpacking stuff.

“We just moved in about a week ago. We had the family here a week ago – the wife, the baby, the dogs…

“So we just got somewhat settled at the crib for about seven days and now it’s like, got to figure it out.”

Green is now looking for a new team but according to reports the 36-year-old could still return to the 76ers this season should a roster spot become available.

The wing said he had “unfinished business” with the 76ers when he made his brief return to the team.

“Being familiar with the city, being familiar with the team, and the group, those guys having minutes on the floor with them and knowing how they operate was a big decision aside of playing for Nick [Nurse] so both those combined made it easy decision for me,” he said.

“I know that I can play in the system or play with those guys and thrive.

“We know how to play off each other and, hopefully, figure it out and make it work regardless of who was coaching and who’s on the floor.

“We can make something special happen and I feel like there’s some unfinished business.”
