The Kansas City Chiefs have signed another weapon for Patrick Mahomes and a former New England Patriots starting quarterback to bolster their ridiculous offensive depth chart.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Kansas City Chiefs have signed Bailey Zappe to their practice squad. Zappe was cut by the Patriots on Tuesday after spending two years with the organization.

On top of that, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Chiefs have also signed former Cincinnati Bengals and Denver Broncos running back Samaje Perine. The Broncos released Perine on Tuesday, one year after signing him to a two-year pact worth $7.5 million in free agency.

The additions of Zappe and Perine come two days after the Chiefs reunited with wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. New England also released the Super Bowl 57 champion ahead of roster cuts, with two years remaining on his contract.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed Carson Wentz to back up Mahomes in free agency, but it never hurts to have a quality third-stringer just in case. Zappe started eight games over his two years with the Pats (14 game appearances), and tossed 2,053 yards and 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions.

Perine, who also had brief stints in Washington and Miami, has 1,830 career rushing yards and eight rushing scores. As a pass-catcher, he has 151 receptions for 1,191 yards and six touchdowns.

The Rich (AKA The Kansas City Chiefs) Get Richer

The Kansas City offense was already stacked after they signed Marquise Brown and used a first-round pick on Texas speedster Xavier Worthy. As if Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Rashee Rice, and the Creed Humphrey-led offensive line weren’t scary enough.

With Smith-Schuster, Perine and Zappe coming aboard, the Chiefs are loaded with depth across the board. Zappe would be a solid QB2 option on most other NFL team rosters, yet he’s merely on the practice squad of the defending Super Bowl champions.
