Las Vegas Aces superstar ALas Vegas Aces superstar A’ja Wilson welcomed Kate Martin and then took a dig at the rookie’s outfit for the 2024 WNBA Draft.

Former Iowa Hawkeyes backup guard Kate Martin attended the 2024 WNBA Draft mainly to support her former teammate Caitlin Clark. While Clark, as expected, was named the No. 1 pick by the Indiana Fever, Martin’s landing spot remained a mystery.

She looked a bit stunned when the Las Vegas Aces called her name as the 18th selection in the draft.

Martin, unlike many of the prospects, didn’t dress up, probably not expecting to go on stage. She seemed surprised when her name was called, and fans at Gainbridge FieldHouse in Indiana were confused that she was too casually geared up.

Las Vegas Aces superstar A’ja Wilson couldn’t resist poking fun at her:

“Welcome @kate_martin22 !!! I have an outfit for youuuu”.

Wilson, the unquestioned star of the defending champs, has already found a bit of chemistry going with the team’s incoming rookie.

She and the Aces’ other stars will not be disappointed, as Kate Martin might be the best fit for them. After playing backup to superstar Caitlin Clark for four years, she should immediately adapt to her role as part of the supporting cast.

With seasoned stars and veterans around her, Martin could see her game improve significantly. She was previously limited to corner shots and catch-and-shoot threes but expanded her game a bit more.

In her final season with the Hawkeyes, she averaged career-highs in points (13.1 PPG), rebounds (6.8 RPG) and shooting efficiency (50.7%).

A’ja Wilson and the Aces are expected to get a boost from Kate Martin and the other rookies

A’ja Wilson will head the Las Vegas Aces’ quest for a three-peat when the 2024 WNBA season opens.

Coach Becky Hammon still has Candace Parker, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, Chelsea Gray and Alysha Clark to help Wilson. However, they will need all the help they can get to go for a grand slam.

Dyaisha Fair, Kate Martin, Elizabeth Kitley and Angel Jackson are expected to strengthen the bench mob with their arrivals. In a season that’s expected to be very competitive, the Aces will need an all-hands-on-deck approach.

Martin probably didn’t expect to be called up, which was the reason she wasn’t dressed up. But the Las Vegas Aces know what she can do to help A’ja Wilson sustain the team’s dominance in the WNBA.

It was suggested the ex-Iowa Hawkeyes’ shooter belongs in a kitchen.

Clark applauds

Caitlin Clark ensured she baked Michael Che a humble pie after the comedian directed a sexist joke at her during a Saturday Night Live show during which he said her retired jersey should be replaced by a kitchen item.

Che joined SNL as a writer in 2013 and became a cast member in 2014 and has co-hosted the “Weekend Update” segment on SNL alongside Colin Jost, on which he made the comments about the legendary NCAA basketball star.

Che’s comedy style is often characterized by his sharp wit, observational humor, and his willingness to tackle controversial or taboo topics.

“The University of Iowa,” Che said on the show. “Announced that basketball star Caitlin Clark will have her jersey retired and replaced with an apron.

“I am a fan, Caitlin, by the way.”

He frequently incorporates elements of social commentary into his routines, offering views on current events, race relations, and other cultural issues and this time he centered on sexism.

But Clark didn’t appreciate it and questioned his support for her as she hit back by saying, “Really, Michael? Because I heard that little apron joke you did,” before bringing up examples of him attacking women’s sport in the past.

The pair did remain on good terms, however. Che wished Clark good luck in the draft and in turn, Clark presented him with a signed apron and joked that he doesn’t have a girlfriend, but it was all in good taste from the pair.

Clark roasts Che

Clark might have a reputation as an incredible basketball player and she is likely to be selected as the first overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft bar something unpredicted and unprecedented.

But she also has a taste for comedy herself as she made sure to have Che embarrass himself in front of national television by reading out some jokes she had wrote at his expense.

“The Indiana Fever have the first pick in this Monday’s draft,” Clark wrote and Che read. “A reminder that Indiana Fever is a WNBA team and not what Michael Che gave to dozens of women at Purdue University.”

“Netflix’s top new show is Ripley, featuring an eerily, unsettling performance by actor Andrew Scott,” He then said on Clark’s behalf. “Critics say it’s the hardest thing to watch on Netflix since Michael Che’s special Shame the Devil.”

The Women’s NBA Draft 2024 will take place on Monday, April 15 with the selections beginning at 19:30 ET at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Jason Whitlock has blunt take on South Carolina HC Dawn Staley.

Following South Carolina’s victory over Iowa in the NCAA championship game, head coach Dawn Staley found herself in the spotlight for her postgame comments from the podium.

Jason Whitlock has blunt take on South Carolina HC Dawn Staley

She thanked God for her third championship and also acknowledged the $3.4 million NIL-valued (per On3) Caitlin Clark’s contribution to promoting women’s basketball.

These comments from Staley drew criticism from Jason Whitlock, who is known for his blunt takes on his show “Fearless.”

He called Staley’s tears “crocodile tears” and pointed out that Staley could’ve supported Clark earlier in the season but she chose to remain silent until after securing the championship.

“Dawn Staley run out here, pretend like, continue this gimmick that you love god and that you know Caitlin Clark is great,” Whitlock said.

“You know how long ago Dawn Stalye could’ve told everybody, “Hey, get up off Caitlin Clark’s back”.

Do you know how long ago she could’ve done that? But she waited until after she won the championship.”

“Caitlin Clark gets abused all season, everybody’s trying to diminish her, Dawn Staley is quiet.

Now that I got my championship, now god is good… and god answers all prayers and all,” Whitlock continued.

“You was favorite long before you won your first championship, and this is your third, and that you for all these crocodile tears on your third championship.

You’re more emotional about a third championship? You’ve lost one game in two years.

Now you’re like … this is the proof of how good god is. Had you lost, what would you have said?,” he added

Indeed, Caitlin Clark faced a lot of abuse throughout her college career. Despite all that, she never stopped and broke several records to etch her name in history.

She averaged 31.6 points, 7.4 rebounds and 8.9 assists per game this season.

Moreover, she also became the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer and Naismith women’s player of the year 2024 twice.

Caitlin Clark WNBA Draft Projection Updates

After an impressive college career, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Caitlin Clark, who declared for the WNBA Draft 2024, is expected to go first overall by the Indiana Fever.

At Fever, she would team up with last year’s top choice, Aliyah Boston, who formerly played for South Carolina. This will form an excellent duo in Indianapolis. The draft is slated for April 15 in New York City.
