The monarch made a decision after Prince Harry’s memoir Spare was published, which reportedly shocked the couple.
The couple were reportedly shocked by the King’s decision
King Charles reportedly left Meghan Markle and Prince Harry “shocked” by one key move he made years nearly three years after the couple quit life as senior royals.
The King, now 76, did not release a statement after Prince Harry’s controversial memoir Spare was released in 2023, but instead is believed to have decided to use a more private approach to make his feelings clear.
As reported by the Scottish Daily Express, writer Omid Scobie claimed the monarch did not read a page of the book but still was left angry by its content, which included criticism and allegations against members of the Royal Family – especially Queen Camilla and Prince William.
The King is believed to have requested the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to vacate their UK royal residence Frogmore Cottage and remove their final possessions just days after the publication of Spare, on the basis that they were no longer senior working royals and hadn’t been living there for some time.
Scobie claimed: “King Charles made his feelings clear in private, despite not having read a page of the book (just as he refused to watch the Netflix series).”
Prince Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43, were contacted by the Keeper of the Privy Purse Sir Michael John Stevens, who told them they had to leave Frogmore – a property that had been a wedding gift to the couple from the late Queen Elizabeth II.
They were given until June 2023 to depart from the property and they reportedly left on the 29th of that month.
Mr Scobie claimed the couple, who have been living at their Montecito mansion in California since 2020, felt shocked and disappointed over the request.
While the UK was no longer their main base, the couple were fond of the property and had even refurbished it before stepping away from royal life.
Harry and Meghan said they enjoyed living at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor
Talking about their UK home in Spare, Harry said: “We loved that place. From the first minute.
“It felt as if we were destined to live there. We couldn’t wait to wake up in the morning, go for a long walk in the gardens, check in with the swans. Especially grumpy Steve.
“We met the Queen’s gardeners, got to know their names and the names of all the flowers. They were thrilled at how much we appreciated, and praised, their artistry.”
Prince Harry has visited the UK multiple times in recent months and has opted to stay at hotels or with non-royal relatives, including his uncle Earl Charles Spencer.
The couple no longer have a home in the UK.
