ITV’s latest drama Out There, featuring Martin Clunes, has dealt a major blow as another popular show has come out on top in latest TV ratings.

The gritty series immediately captured the attention of viewers with its raw depiction of the underbelly of county lines drug trafficking. The show delves into the chilling effects of the drug trade on rural communities through Nathan’s experiences.

Martin has taken on the role of Welsh farmer Nathan Williams, who takes on a drug gang causing a menace in his rural community.

Despite the captivating storyline, ITVX had its best day since the Euro finals in July 2024 as reality TV show Love Island: All Stars attracted 3 million streams on Monday night.

The service was up 18% on the same day in 2024, ahead by 2 million streams. On the same night, Out There was right behind the dating series with 2.1 million streams, and hit soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale hit 1.8 million.

Since its debut to our TV screens, Out There faced immediate backlash on social media due to Martin Clunes’ attempt at a Welsh accent that has not been well received by some fans.

It didn’t take long for viewers to take to social media to share their reaction on the actor’s interpretation.

“As a Welsh person, this welsh accent is poor. Martin, you’re great but the accent is really off putting. I can’t watch it #OutThere,” one viewer remarked on X. (sic)

Another noted: “I mean, there are a number of distinct Welsh accents but this is none of them. #OutThere.” And yet another viewer commented: “Martin Clunes Welsh accent is bad but not bad like Stephen Graham’s in White House Farm #OutThere.” (sic)

One fan tweeted: “#OutThere The thing that most annoys me about the accent is that it’s the only thing people are tweeting about.” (sic)

ITV’s Head of Drama Polly Hill said: “Out There is a brilliantly compelling drama, from the team behind Manhunt, where county lines become very real for a father and son already dealing with the modern challenges of running a farm.

“Martin Clunes is wonderful as Nathan, in a drama full of surprises, as he tries to navigate the best way to save his son, in a world he doesn’t understand.”
