The New Orleans Saints designated Jameis Winston as a post-June 1 cut and he has since decided to sign with the Cleveland Browns.

His departure left Derek Carr’s backup open.

The Saints are signing former Raiders, Bears quarterback Nathan Peterman.

Peterman is used to this position as he has experience as a Carr backup, being one of the Raiders’ reserves under Jon Gruden, and has worked with new Saints QBs coach Andrew Janocko with the Bears.

His deal is for one year and worth the veteran minimum.

Peterman is a former fifth-round pick of the Bills back in 2017.

He registered zero stats in 2023.

Peterman appeared in three games for the Bears in 2022 and started the season finale against the Minnesota Vikings, where he completed 11-of-19 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. That loss would help the Bears secure the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft which the team ultimately traded to make sure they got the number one pick yet again in 2024.

In 2022, Peterman appeared in three games for the Bears and completed 56 percent of his passes for 139 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
