DJ Humphries’ dreams of retiring an Arizona Cardinals star have been dashed.

The veteran offensive tackle had been the Cardinals’ longest-serving player after being drafted by the team in 2015.

But Humphries has now been released by Arizona after suffering a devastating ACL tear towards the end of last season.

Humphries is not expected to start the 2024 NFL season due to his lengthy rehabilitation process.

And the 30-year-old has been let to go free up cap space for new signings.

The move will save $9 million in salary-cap space and count $13.8 million in dead money.

Humphries, who was the 24th pick of the 2015 draft, started all 98 games he appeared in at Arizona.

He made his lone Pro Bowl appearance in 2021.

In 2022, he said his plan was to retire with the Cardinals.

“My plan is my plan,” Humphries said.

“My plan was to play here my whole career. If something happens outside of the plan, then it’s like, ‘Oh, shoot. I’ll handle it how it comes.’

“But the plan is the plan. We’re going to roll it like how I set out to do it and that’s the way we’re going to do it.”

The Cardinals have moved quickly to replace Humphries, who has made $83 million over the course of his career.

2024 NFL Free Agency
Arizona has made a move to sign former Cincinnati Bengals tackle Jonah Williams.

Williams is signing a two-year, $30 million deal that includes $19 million in guaranteed pay, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Williams, who was the  11th overall pick in 2019, leaves Cincinnati after five seasons as a free agent.
