Taylor Swift may be the accomplished songwriter, but boyfriend Travis Kelce is apparently the improvisational talent in the relationship.

Kelce’s would-be game-winning lateral against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night was entirely unscripted, says his Kansas City Chiefs teammate, Patrick Mahomes.

The play was overturned because Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney lined up offsides, resulting in Kansas City’s 20-17 defeat. But officiating aside, Kelce’s quick thinking in the fourth quarter at Arrowhead Stadium was a shining example of is understanding of the game, Mahomes told 610 Sports Radio’s The Drive.

‘100 percent improv, man,’ Mahomes said Monday. ‘That’s just a great player making a great play in a big-time moment. Just to have the knowledge of your surroundings to know that guy is open across the field, getting the football to him, trying to make a play for the team. It truly was a really cool play. It’s a shame it didn’t count, but it shows the type of player that he is.’

The play unfolded with just over a minute left in Sunday’s game, when Mahomes delivered a 25-yard pass to Kelce, who could have gone down deep in Bills territory to set up a game-tying field goal. But instead, the All-Pro tight end reversed field with an over-hand lateral to Toney down the opposite sideline, resulting in what appeared to be the game-winning touchdown.

The lateral by Kelce (left) was another example of the tight end’s talent, said Mahomes (right)

‘To be able to think to lateral the ball across the field, within under two minutes, in a big-time football game against a good team,’ Mahomes continued, ‘he’s a legendary player. He does a lot of great things. He has the confidence to do it. He knows the field, and it’s like he’s playing at a different speed than everybody else to slow it down and make that decision in that moment.’

Alas, Kelce’s brilliance wasn’t enough as replays showed that Toney was clearly lined up offsides.

As for the offsides call, and Mahomes’ belligerent displeasure towards officials on the sideline, the reigning Super Bowl MVP took a different tone on Monday.

‘Stuff like that happens, you got to move on,’ said Mahomes, who refused to point the finger at Toney.

He also appeared to regret his sideline outburst.

‘Can’t be that way towards the officials or anybody in life,’ Mahomes said, adding: ‘Not a great example for kids watching the game.’

As for the 8-5 Chiefs, they’re still in first place in the AFC West, although they now trail the 10-3 Baltimore Ravens and 9-4 Miami Dolphins for first place and a first-round bye in the postseason.

‘We still got four games left and we got to do whatever we can to try and fight to win the division and get to the playoffs,’ he said.
