A blockbuster trade proposal has the Pittsburgh Steelers moving backup quarterback Justin Fields to a rebuilding AFC team before today’s deadline.
The Steelers changed up their quarterback room in the offseason by landing both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. They bid farewell to Kenny Pickett (traded to the Philadelphia Eagles), Mitch Trubisky (released and signed with the Buffalo Bills) and Mason Rudolph (signed with the Tennessee Titans), and the changes have netted positive results so far.
Fields won four of six starts with Wilson sidelined because of a calf injury, but head coach Mike Tomlin went back to the nine-time Pro Bowler following his return. Wilson has won his first two starts, tossing three touchdowns against just two interceptions.
Justin Fields happens to be in his contract year, so the Steelers would be better off trading him at the deadline and getting something in return as opposed to losing him for nothing.
Richard Louis of FanSided’s Da Windy City site proposed a blockbuster trade idea that has Pittsburgh trading Fields to the Titans in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round draft pick:
“The Titans should send over a sixth-round pick to Pittsburgh for Fields. In 2024, the 25-year-old completed 66% of his throws for 1,106 passing yards, five passing touchdowns, 231 rushing yards, and another five rushing scores.
Tennessee’s offense has Tony Pollard, Tyjae Spears, Calvin Ridley, and Tyler Boyd. That is a nice collection of weapons, and Fields would immediately become the QB1 there and could allow him to build a future there.”
The Titans appear to have given up on 2023 second-round pick Will Levis, and the aforementioned Rudolph isn’t a long-term option. So don’t be surprised if GM Ran Carthon ends up making a move for a QB before Tuesday’s deadline.
Titans Should Trade For Justin Fields
Since Justin Fields wouldn’t cost much in a trade, the Titans might as well take the chance on him and see if head coach Brian Callahan can fully unlock his potential.
As Louis noted, the Titans have a quality set of playmakers that includes Tony Pollard and Calvin Ridley. If they were to trade for Fields and keep him beyond 2024, Carthon would also have the ample opportunity to increase his QB’s supporting cast.
With Tennessee likely to land a top-five pick, Carthon could draft someone like Travis Hunter or Tetairoa McMillan. In free agency, he could target stars like Tee Higgins, Chris Godwin, Amari Cooper or Stefon Diggs.
