Sir Rod Stewart was devastated after witnessing his team get knocked out of the Champions League.

Despite his English origins, the 80-year-old staunchly supports Celtic FC and even supports Scotland over England in major tournaments. His deep affection for Scottish football can be traced back to his family ties, with his father Robert hailing from Leith, Edinburgh.

On Tuesday evening (February 18), the rock icon sat down with his son, Alastair Stewart, 19, to watch Celtic take on Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League.

The hosts led 2-1 after the first leg in Scotland, but it was Celtic who took the lead in the second leg clash, making it 2-2 on aggregate with less than 30 minutes to go.

Despite the game appearing to be heading into extra time, Celtic’s night turned to heartbreak when Alphonso Davies scored a stoppage-time goal to dramatically secure Bayern’s place in the last 16.

Although he was heartbroken by the loss, Sir Rod took immense pride in his team as he wrote: “So proud of this Celtic team.”

Ahead of Celtic’s first leg clash with Bayern last week, Sir Rod stunned fans with an unexpected visit to Celtic Park.

The Maggie May hitmaker made no secret that he had “had a couple” of drinks when CBS Sports presenter Peter Schmeichel interviewed him.

The admission triggered waves of laughter from the studio, including Rod’s longtime pal Jamie Carragher.

Rod brewed more chuckles when he declared: “It’s not going to be easy but you’ve got to remember that we have beaten Barcelona, AC Milan, Manchester United.

“So, if we get lucky and don’t make any c*** ups in the first couple of minutes, we’re in with a good chance… Did I say c*** ups?” he laughed.

Jamie then quipped: “If Celtic win tonight, is it going to be a big night?” To which Rod retorted with a grin: “Yeah, it could be a big night…whatever happens, I’m so proud of this club, and I’m proud to be interviewed by Gordon Banks!”

The studio erupted in laughter once more as Rod added with a chuckle: “You had better get me off the air. I’m embarrassing myself!”
