2023 has been a mixed year for The Flash, a DC comics superhero capable of running at impossible speeds and saving lives within seconds.

Grant Gustin portrays the role of Barry Allen, who after being struck by lightning ends up with the power of super speed. Subsequently, the resident of Central City decides to use his newly gained powers to fight crime as the Flash.

For nine seasons, Gustin has done incredibly well to not just lead The Flash but also in some ways Arrowverse. The actor took little time in winning over the audience with his eccentric charm and intelligence, and openness to showcase both the strengths and flaws of the forensic investigator.

However, the ending of the CW’s show after nine seasons left many fans disappointed and wanting for more, with The Flash’s culmination also bringing down the curtains on Arrowverse. The finale sees Barry, the avatar of the Speed Force, appealing to Eddie, the chosen representation of the Negative Force, to form an alliance to save the timeline and the universe.

He ultimately decides it’s time to share his powers with the world. Explaining his decision to end The Flash, Gustin told EW:

“It just felt like time. A lot of people wanted us to get to 10 seasons, but in my mind we did 10 years — it was 2013 when I was cast as Barry Allen, and we finished in 2023. We had done everything we needed to do, the characters were in a good place, and we had reached the conclusion.”

However, fans in the comments section of the video expressed their dissatisfaction with the writers, with one saying: “Feel so bad for Grant that the writers of this show let him down so badly because he was a brilliant flash.”

Many others voiced the same issue, adding Grant deserved better writers and quality CGIs. Another thing that seemed very clear in the comments section is that Grant’s Flash is the definitive version of the character for many fans and the underwhelming culminating phase won’t impact how they feel about his brilliant decade-long portrayal.

What The Flash Showrunner Said About the Ending of Grant Gustin’s Series

The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace, however, is proud of the ending of the series, as familiar faces bring the story full circle in the four-part series finale. He described the last episode as a love letter to the audience.

More importantly, Wallace is happy with how he leveled up Barry to his full comic book potential. Describing his vision and the superhero’s journey, he said (via EW):

“He’s not the same person who got struck by lightning way back in 2014. Look at what he’s become over nine years, which is a message to the audience: Look at what you all can become. Everybody can fulfill their full potential if you just take a heroic path.”

After The Flash, another DC-linked show on the CW, Superman & Lois, is set to end. The show starring Tyler Hoechlin will bid farewell with its fourth season, which is scheduled to premiere in 2024.
