The San Antonio Spurs last won a game 30 days ago. On the other hand, people around Victor Wembanyama say you probably won’t see him without a book in hand for 30 minutes.

According to Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News, Wembanyama reads a lot of fantasy novels. In fact, he confirms he has lost count of how many he has read.
Wembanyama is rarely seen on flights to away games without a thick book in his enormous hands, his teammates said.

“He has books this big,” said Julian Champagnie, holding his thumb and forefinger inches apart.

“He is getting through ’em,” Tre Jones said. “It’s not like he is just stuck on page one. He is not doing it for the pictures. He is reading.”

Wembanyama ranks fantasy as his favorite literary genre. His favorite author: Brandon Sanderson, a 47-year-old native of Lincoln, Nebraska, best known for his “Mistborn” series and for finishing Robert Jordan’s epic, bestselling fantasy series “The Wheel of Time.”

Tom Orsborn on Victor Wembanyama’s reading habits
In a generation where young NBA millionaires either hold a phone or a game console in their free time, the seven-foot-five French phenom is the exception. Wembanyama said staring too long at a TV screen hurts his eyes a bit.

And if you’re wondering, the 2023 No. 1 overall pick did not just pick up his reading habits recently. His former school principal in France, Barbara Martin, has already noted how Wembanyama loves books. Besides his thirst for Sanderson’s novels, Martin noted that Wembanyama likes science fiction and has already read The Star Wars.

A Royal Dig?

Besides the 19-year-old consuming a voracious amount of fantasy literary novels, another noticeable detail is Jones’ comment about “doing it for the pictures.” Jones is a bookworm himself, but many couldn’t help but notice those statements.

A few years back, a meme about LeBron James reading only the first page of books became viral. Could he be dissing the Los Angeles Lakers superstar?
