MARVIN Bagley was almost destined to being drafted with the No. 2 overall pick thanks to his bloodline.
The 24-year-old Washington Wizards big man Bagley and his grandfather were taken in the NBA Draft with the exact same number selection 54 years apart.

Bagley, listed at 6-foot-10, 235 pounds, had a stellar freshman year with Duke in 2017, posting 22 points per game.
He would announce his intention to forgo his final three seasons of collegiate eligibility, and was selected with the No. 2 overall pick by the Sacramento Kings in the 2018 NBA Draft.
The selection of Bagley came 54 years after his grandfather, Joe Caldwell, nicknamed ‘Jumpin Joe’ was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in 1964.
Prior to 1964, Caldwell was a star player at Arizona State.
He averaged 18.2 points per games in his three seasons at Arizona State.
And Caldwell helped defeat UCLA in the NCAA tournament before the legendary head coach John Wooden and the Bruins won 10 titles in 12 years.
He also contributed to the United States winning gold in the 1964 Olympics.
The Pistons drafted Caldwell in the 1964 NBA Draft and he’d become a two-time All-Star in the NBA.
He bolted to the ABA and signed with the Atlanta Hawks.
Caldwell eventually became the president of the players’ union until he retired in 1975.
Unfortunately, his grandson Bagley hasn’t had the same fortunes playing professional basketball.
Bagley played five seasons for the Kings and had his career-high mark in points (14.9) in his rookie campaign.
But in 2022, he would be traded to the Pistons, the same team that drafted his grandfather in 1964.
“It’s crazy how it comes back around,” Bagley said, via NBA.com.
“I’m excited to be here and be able to have something in common with him.
“When I’m at the dinner table talking to him, we can share Detroit stories.”
Bagley signed a three-year, $33 million deal with Detroit in the same year.
He was traded to the Wizards in 2024.
For the 2023-24 season, Bagley averaged 11.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game.
